We knew that MediaTek would eventually catch up to Qualcomm's Snapdragon mobile chips and 2022 will be the year when that happens. MediaTek has just revealed the benchmark scores for the Dimensity 9000 chipset and based on the comparison with the leaked scores of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, it seems that Dimensity 9000 is as fast and capable as the Snapdragon chip.
On AnTuTu, the Dimensity 9000 has managed to achieve a score of 1,017,488. A Realme GT 2 Pro prototype with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 managed to clock 1,025,215. On Geekbench, the Dimensity 9000 scored1,273 in the single-core and 4,324 in the multi-core tests; on par with the Snapdragon rival.
The Dimensity 9000's GPU is slightly behind the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and it shows in the scores. On GFXBench v3.0 Manhattan test, the Dimensity 9000 scores a total of 238 points, which is just shy of the 267 points of the Snapdragon.
Note that Qualcomm is yet to reveal the official benchmark score of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip. Hence, you should watch out for that one to cement your judgement. Additionally, you should know that benchmark scores differ from device to device. Hence, smartphones using the Dimensity 9000 chip may end up getting higher scores than MediaTek's advertised scores due to software optimization and other developments.
However, based on the initial scores, it seems that MediaTek has worked hard to close the gap to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 this year. The Dimensity 9000 has its three performance cores clocked at a slightly higher clockspeed than that of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, which could be reason for the slightly higher CPU scores.
Last year's Dimensity 1200 was MediaTek's flagship chip but in terms of raw performance, it compared with the Snapdragon 870, which itself was a tweaked low-cost alternative to the Snapdragon 888 and was based on the Snapdragon 865. However, it made midrange Android phones more powerful and brought priced down to the sub- ₹30,000 segment.
Will you choose a Dimensity 9000 flagship over
