Minecraft Earth, Microsoft’s new mobile AR game aims to recreate Pokémon Go magic

Pokémon Go took the world by storm with a brand new Augmented Reality-based gameplay. Since its launch in 2016, there have been a number of new AR-based mobile games. And now another popular game is getting the AR treatment - Minecraft.

Microsoft earlier this week introduced Minecraft Earth, a mobile AR version of the popular desktop game. Just like Pokémon Go, you can explore virtual characters, items and build things through your smartphone and project them into real-world at life-size.

To make the game more interesting and competitive, Minecraft Earth will allow users to compete with nearby virtual characters. You can also work with your fellow Minecrafters on the game and build things together. The game will also feature mini adventures.

Microsoft hasn't yet revealed details about how it is going to monetise the game but has confirmed it will be a free-to-play game. According to WindowsCentral, Microsoft isn't going to include payment-based features like loot boxes and time-gating. The game, however, may have some in-app purchases to improve users' profile in the game.

"We take safety seriously and are taking measures to make Minecraft Earth an enjoyable and reliable experience for all our players. Players and parents will be able to use Account Management to adjust safety and privacy settings. A reporting system will allow players to report any concerns in-game and on our website. In addition, we will also have a moderation team working 24/7 to manage and respond to reports," said Microsoft on its website.

Minecraft Earth will come to iOS and Android later this year. Interested users can sign up for a beta programme on the company's website. After signing up, Microsoft will send an email with instructions on how to claim your free skin.
