The attempts of various studios to fill the giant high-fantasy gap left behind by the Game of Thrones has been very competitive. Within three years, we have witnessed The Witcher and Shadow and Bone on Netflix and The Wheel of Time on Amazon Prime Videos. Disney+ Hotstar is also entering the race with its fantasy adventure Willow. But the Rings of Power are different from them. Not only because it is based on an existing franchise but also because it was under works since 2017, two years before Game of Thrones finally wrapped up. It also does not need to woo the audience since most of its fans are already anticipating the series.

Despite that, it is set to become the most expensive OTT series in history with a reported budget of $465 million for the first season. The story is a prequel to the events of the Lord of the Rings trilogy movie and it explores the Second Age of Middle Earth and follow the events of forging of the rings, the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron, the fall of the island kingdom of Númenor, and the last alliance between Elves and Men. And Amazon seems willing to take a big bet on the series as it has promised five seasons to the epic tale.
