Qualcomm launches Snapdragon 780G 5G SoC: All you need to know

Qualcomm has announced the Snapdragon 78G 5G mobile platform and it is the latest addition to the existing 7-series. The new SoC (system-on-chip) is based on the 5nm process technology which we’ve last seen being used on the flagship Snapdragon 888.

The Snapdragon 78G 5G is the first Snapdragon 7-series chip to come with a triple image signal processor (ISP) that includes support for 4K HDR along with computational HDR and HDR10 video capture.

First launched in 2018, the Snapdragon 7-series SoCs are now available in over 350 devices.

Devices based on the new Snapdragon 78G 5G will be available in the second quarter of this year, however, no handset manufacturer has announced yet if they are bringing in this chip to power their devices.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 78G 5G has been designed as an upgrade to the existing Snapdragon 765G and the Snapdragon 750G. It comes with a Kyro 670 CPU that claims to deliver up to 40% performance increase over its predecessor.

The Snapdragon 78G 5G also includes Adreno 642 GPU and Hexagon 770 processor that has been paired with the sixth-gen Qualcomm AI Engine and can deliver up to 12 tera operations per second (TOPs) AI performance. There is also a second-generation Qualcomm Sensing Hub along with a dedicated low-power AI processor for audio processing.

The Snapdragon 78G 5G comes with a Snapdragon X53 5G Modem-RF System that can deliver up to 3.3Gbps of download speeds on the sub-6 GHz frequencies. There is the FastConnect 6900 System that made its debut on the Snapdragon 888 and brings in WiFi 6 and WiFi 6E.

This chipset also has Bluetooth v5.2 connectivity and includes the recently launched Qualcomm Snapdragon Sound technology and the Qualcomm Snapdragon Elite Gaming integration that is supposed to bring in support for all top AAA titles. The Snapdragon 78G 5G also comes with support for full-HD display and a refresh rate up to 144Hz.

Along with all this, the chip has Qualcomm Spectra 570 ISP that supports triple rear camera setup with up to 25-megapixel sensor or up to 84-megapixel single sensor and it also enables up to 192-megapixel of photo capturing as well as 4K HDR video recording.

Qualcomm has also provided support for LPDDR4 memory of up to 2.1GHz and up to 16GB density along with Quick Charge 4 support for fast charging.
