Seagate on Tuesday announced the launch of its Lyve online data transfer service, for the transfer of large quantities of data as part of its Seagate Lyve portfolio of products. This will involve physically transferring data across servers, as well as using modular and scalable hardware and lift-and-shift initiatives to help move data, the company said.

The company said that it commissioned an IDC survey that studied over a thousand businesses, and found that more than half of them moved an average total of 473 terabytes that was transferred across various locations daily, weekly or monthly. The company’s own Rethink Data report also predicts an average annual increase of 42.2 percent in enterprise data, over the next two years.

Data transfers with Lyve will be powered by a company’s modular and scalable hardware which are cloud-vendor agnostic, the company says. It also cited the example of an entertainment service that had issues with transferring raw video in 4K resolution a limited bandwidth of 35Mbit/sec, but managed to quickly move data to its cloud data center daily with the help of the service.

Florian Baumann, Dell’s chief technical officer of Automotive and AI also stated that the Lyve service had helped the company move a large amount of data from a vehicle fleet to the company’s data servers, by physically transferring data. It’s a simple and scalable solution and fills a gap that our customers had in the data gravity process,” he said.

Seagate hasn’t revealed how much the service will cost, but says that the service is an on-demand one and will feature a web-based purchasing model so that customers can pay for the services they require as and when they require data to be moved. “With only a fraction of enterprise data being put to work due to economics and storage complexities, Seagate has simplified how mass capacity data is securely captured, aggregated, transported, and managed,” the company’s senior vice president of marketing Jeff Fochtman said in a press statement.
