Horror games are a YouTube hit, if PewDiePie's subscriber base is anything to go by, and genre veteran Frictional Games is preparing another barrel of scares with 'Soma.'
The studio is known for the genuinely-terrifying 'Amnesia: The Dark Descent' and its oversight of sequel 'Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs,' which was seconded to 'Dear Esther' developer TheChineseRoom.
The second of two teaser trailers sees a woman, Reed, attempt an interrogation -- perhaps a psychological evaluation -- of what appears to be a trash-heap robot, a sentient AI, a man trapped inside a robot's body, a ruin of cables and motors whose emotional state is becoming more and more volatile.
Thematically, there are observable ties to the SCP Foundation, a science fiction-oriented website whose content is intriguing and oftentimes creepy.
If nothing else, it seems that Frictional has swapped dank medieval horror for chilling sci-fi spookiness, losing none of its deft, unnerving touch along the way.
Space exists on the Soma Systems website for a total of eight 'case files' like these; should disclosure continue at a rate of one per week, a more thorough reveal in December could be anticipated.
But since when has good horror complied with expectation?
