Spotify could integrate videos on its app soon. The streaming service would join its rivals YouTube Music and Apple Music that already support full music videos.
Spotify’s currently testing video integration and it was spotted by Jane Manchun Wong. Spotify plans on introducing videos through a tab to switch between Canvas, Album Art and Video. There aren’t any other details about what the video on Spotify means but it’s most likely music videos. Album art is self-explanatory but canvas is a short video clip that plays on loop.
Spotify will show all three tabs on top of the now playing page. First you have Canvas, then Album Art and then there’s Video. Based on the screenshot shared by Wong, tapping on video doesn’t show anything at the moment. It just says that Spotify is “exploring what could happen here”.
This isn’t the first time we’re seeing videos on Spotify. The music streaming service has experimented with videos before but it stopped in 2017. Spotify is also reportedly testing video podcasts with two YouTubers Zane Hijazi and Heath Hussar. This is however visible to 50% of Spotify’s podcast listeners.
If Spotify does add music videos on its platform, it will be a major addition. Spotify’s rivals like Apple Music and YouTube Music already support music videos.
