Across the world today, a number of popular apps including the likes of Spotify, Tinder, Pintrest, etc have been crashing on iOS through the day. Early reports suggest that this could be happening due to a Facebook bug.
Both Pintrest and Spotify were crashing on our devices (iPhone 11 and iPhone SE 2nd Gen) when we checked before filing this copy.
Social media has been full of reports all day of apps crashing when they are launched on iPads and iPhones and you can also see the outage spikes on DownDetector. According to reports, these apps can only be launched when the device is offline. This ‘fix’ makes sense for something like Spotify where you can listen to music offline, but not so much for other apps.
While it has not been confirmed yet why this is happening, early reports suggest that the issue is being caused by Facebook’s SDK which many apps use to manage user logins. Even those users who have not used their Facebook accounts to log into an app have been affected by these crashes though. Also, Android users have not complained about any outage yet.
On its developer platform, Facebook mentioned today morning that it was aware of the issue and was investigating an increase in errors on the iOS SDK, but the issue has not been fixed yet.
This is not the first time there’s been an issue involving the Facebook SDK. A similar problem occurred in May this year leading to dozens of apps crashing. The issue was fixed within a day.
