New SUPER ID in India to link your Aadhaar card, PAN, driving licence, passport coming?

The Central government is working on a new model of Federated Digital Identity, a successor of the Aadhaar Card that will link multiple digital IDs such as Aadhaar, PAN, driving licence, passport, and others into one ID. According to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology’s (MeitY), the new digital ID will be present in the form of a unique ID, similar to the Aadhaar card number. The draft proposed by the MeitY, the digital identity will “empower" a citizen by “putting her in control of these identities and providing her with the option of choosing which one to use for what purpose, reported the Indian Express. 

The Federal Digital Identity will serve as a one-stop destination to store Central and State-related ID data. This would help citizens to complete KYC or eKYC (know your customer) processes with ease. The proposed plan is a part of the India Enterprise Architecture (IndEA) 2.0 introduced in 2017 to bring government and private entities to ease online identification processes.

According to the framework, the most extensive work would be undertaken by the Centre ‘or by ministries which deal with concurrent or state subjects.’ Whereas, the state governments will look after the ‘state architecture pattern’ and both state and central governments will collectively work on the ‘InDEA Lite architecture pattern’.

Federal digital identity: Purpose

As per the Indian Express report, the proposed framework aims to develop a new digital architecture that will be “interlinked and interoperable." It is likely to ease the process of eKYC with just one unique ID. Since, all the digital identities of a citizen can be interlinked with each other, it would eliminate the need for a repeated verification process. It would also serve as a key to a registry where all different state and Central identities could be stored. The proposal is expected to be brought before the public soon
