Twitter Unmention feature (Dominic Camozzi /Twitter)

Twitter is a platform where conversations never end. It is also a place where news breaks 24/7, generating an avalanche of conversations on a global scale. While some of these conversations are interesting, informative and exciting enough to make you want to be a part of them, others are quite unpleasant to say the least. The problem with Twitter right now is that you cannot excuse yourself from a conversation once you have been mentioned in it. This can sometimes lead to a flurry of unwanted tweets choking your notifications and feed. Twitter has finally understood this problem. Now, it’s reportedly working on a feature that will let Twitter users remove themselves from an unwanted conversation by “unmentioning themselves”.

Twitter’s privacy designer Dominic Camozzi has showed off a bunch of new designs that the company is planning to incorporate into its upcoming ‘Unmention’ feature. The Twitter feature, as Camozzi describes, will enable users to untag themselves from a tweet or a conversation that they don’t want to be involved in by selecting the ‘Unmention yourself from this conversation’ option, which can be accessed by tapping on the three-dot menu on the top-right corner of the tweet. This button will be placed on top of other buttons that let users mute, follow, block a tweep or mute the conversation altogether.

That’s not all, the Twitter designer said that if a user gets mentioned by a tweep whom he doesn’t follow, he will get a special notification. Upon unmentioning from there, the author of the tweet will not be able to mention the user again. In addition to that, users will also be able to restrict specific accounts from mentioning them. “You can also restrict certain accounts from mentioning you...Need some peace and quiet? Keep EVERYONE from mentioning you for 1 day, 3 days, or 7 days,” Camozzi wrote in a series of tweets.

This new Twitter features list doesn’t end there. The designer says that Twitter users will be able to avoid unnecessary attention in three different ways. This includes getting a notification when a user gets too many mentions, reviewing tweets and changing settings to stop the situation from escalating further.

That said, this feature is still in the development stage. The Twitter designer said that the company is inviting suggestions from users as to how it can make this feature better. This means that the Mentions feature is coming but the timeline remains a mystery as of now.
