Twitter’s account verification feature has been spotted in the profile settings option, may make a comeback soon

Back in 2016, Twitter started verifying all the user accounts on its platform, something which was (and still is) considered as a status symbol. However, that came to a halt in 2017 when Twitter said that people started assuming verified accounts as an endorsement. However, it looks like the account verification is about to make a comeback. 

The feature, which has not been made available for public ever since 2017, was spotted in the profile settings option by an app researcher, Jane Manchun Wong (@wongmjane). The researcher even posted a screenshot on Twitter showing its existence in the form of a ‘Request verification’ option that is found under Account > Personal information.

Now, before you get too excited about it, a thing to note here is that the feature is still under tests and there’s no confirmation if it will be seeing the light of the day or not, let alone the time-frame when it will go live. We do think that Twitter has a more strict checking process in place already, something that won’t make the verification badge feel like an endorsement. Of course, there’s no official word from Twitter on all this.

“Verification has long been perceived as an endorsement,” Twitter said back in 2017 when it shut the verification process. “We gave verified accounts visual prominence on the service which deepened this perception. We should have addressed this earlier but did not prioritize the work as we should have.”

At that time, the firm was said to be working on a new authentication and verification program, which from the looks of it, is almost ready to deploy.
