Twitter Spaces rolling out to users in the country

Just last week, we reported that Twitter was still working on its Spaces feature for Android, which was meant to compete with the invite-only Clubhouse app that continues to grow in popularity every day. Now, a new report suggests that Twitter has begun rolling out the feature to a limited audience in the country.

Twitter was already testing the Spaces feature among a few iOS users in December, allowing them to join a Space if they were invited - Meanwhile Android users were still waiting to try out the feature. According to a report from TechRadar, Twitter has now begun pushing out the feature to a wider audience for further testing.

The microblogging site is probably eager to cash in on the popularity of Clubhouse at the moment, where the who’s who of tech companies have occasionally turned up, for public discussions. Tesla CEO and founder Elon Musk have appeared on Clubhouse, as has Facebook’s founder Mark Zuckerberg. Other celebrities reportedly using the app on a regular basis include Drake, Kevin Hart, Oprah, Jared Leto, Ashton Kutcher, and many more.

“We have given a small group of diverse voices, including people in India, access to Spaces to test the feature. By seeking feedback from a variety of communities early on, we can make the product better for everyone. The experiment will expand over time,” a Twitter spokesperson told HT Tech.

Both Spaces and Clubhouse are similar in functionality, with users ‘hosting’ a virtual chat room where everyone is able to talk, or a few designated users can be allowed to talk. Clubhouse’s selling point is that the conversation that takes place is immediately deleted once it concludes. It is unclear whether Twitter’s Spaces feature will also include such functionality - but as it is currently under development, we would likely have to wait until it is officially released.
