Twitter to acquire podcast app Breaker

Breaker, a popular podcast app, said on Monday it would be acquired by social media company Twitter Inc and shut down its app and website next week.

Breaker said on its blog that people can now transfer their subscriptions to other podcast listening apps like those offered by Apple and Spotify.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

"Here at Breaker, we're truly passionate about audio communication and we're inspired by the ways Twitter is facilitating public conversations for people around the world," said CEO Erik Berlin, adding that the Breaker team is joining Twitter.

“We’re impressed by the entrepreneurial spirit at Twitter and enthusiastic about the new experiences that the team is creating,” Berlin wrote.

“Sadly, for us and our users, we’ll be shutting down Breaker on Friday, January 15th,” Berlin added in blog adding that for all users whose podcasts were hosted by Breaker will have to find “new homes” to host and listen to podcasts. 

The blog then mentions how users can transfer their subscriptions by exporting OPML files from the Breaker app to other apps that host podcasts and furnishes detailed instructions for both the Android and iOS app. 

There are also instructions as to how you can move your podcasts to another service by exporting your RSS feed. 

Berlin ends the blog by thanking Breaker's users and saying - “It’s been a fantastic journey building Breaker. We’d like to thank all of our friends and family as well as our investors for believing in us. A huge thank you to our Breaker users — you’ve been an amazing community. Thank you for your support. We believe podcasting has a bright future, and we were grateful to have the opportunity to play a small part in it.”
