Watch: Boston Dynamics’ Atlas humanoid jog like humans

Boston Dynamics' Atlas robot can now jog like humans. The engineering and robots firm released two videos on Thursday to show off what their new robots are now capable of.

The first 30-second video clip shows that Atlas humanoid can now not only take afternoon jog but skillfully overcomes obstacles in its way as well. Atlas last year achieved the ability to backflip last year in November, and in a few months' time it has turned into a pro jogger.

Boston Dynamics, which is backed by Softbank Group, has many a skilled robots to flaunt. Its range includes bots which can open doors, do backflips, and run across an uneven terrain, Mashable reported.

"Atlas is the latest in a line of advanced humanoid robots we are developing. Atlas' control system coordinates motions of the arms, torso and legs to achieve whole-body mobile manipulation, greatly expanding its reach and workspace. Atlas' ability to balance while performing tasks allows it to work in a large volume while occupying only a small footprint," says the company on its website.

The second video features the company's Spotmini robot dog. Spotmini now comes with autonomous navigation mode which means the robot can now walk on its own in a specified area, without requiring manual driving.

"SpotMini autonomously navigates a specified route through an office and lab facility. Before the test, the robot is manually driven through the space so it can build a map of the space using visual data from cameras mounted on the front, back and sides of the robot," the company says in the video description posted on YouTube.

"During the autonomous run, SpotMini uses data from the cameras to localize itself in the map and to detect and avoid obstacles. Once the operator presses 'GO' at the beginning of the video, the robot is on its own. Total walk time for this route is just over 6 minutes."
