  • From one controversy to another and then on to the mother of all crashes! WhatsApp reminds one of the poor old ball in the Pinball machine game. So, is WhatsApp down for the count? The recent WhatsApp crash is going to end the year for this messenger app, the world's most popular, the same way that it started - badly. WhatsApp down and out? The jury is still out on that. (Reuters)

WhatsApp may be down, but it is not dead, yet. WhatsApp subscribers may be leaving the platform by the millions, going by what its rivals are saying, but that is not stopping this Facebook-owned company from trying to win over new subscribers and persuading current ones to stay. It keeps making offers that users cannot refuse. So, even though it suffered a virtual massacre when it got caught in a controversy of its own making over privacy matters of users earlier in the year, and then crashed for over 7 hours recently, it is boldly marching into new terrain and offering features that are truly very useful. The latest one has to do with voice - more like the pause button. It will be available for both Android and iOS users.

In its latest leak, WABetainfo has revealed that WhatsApp is looking at rolling out a voice feature that allows the user to pause the recording and then restart it at their own convenience at the exact spot where they left off. In short, the recording does not have to be completed at one go, thereby giving it the kind of true flexibility that users will really find useful. This WhatsApp feature is still in the works and may be rolled out in a future update. When that will happen is anyone's guess as it is still to reach the beta stage even.

WhatsApp has recently rolled out a number of outstanding features like Disappearing messages, multi-device support, plus many others too. Features like this will definitely draw a lot of attention to WhatsApp and help it buy loyalty of current customers too. However, the jury is still out on whether the platform will be able to retain its No. 1 position in the world as the messaging app with the most subscribers - estimated at over 2 billion. If it keeps on with the controversies and crashes (WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and Oculus had crashed at the same time), not even the most futuristic of features will be able to keep its subscribers loyal.
