WhatsApp-rival Telegram announces video calls feature on Android, iOS as Google plans to shut Duo

A few days ago, few Telegram users spotted the video calling feature in the app. This was indeed confirmed by a report from XDA Developers. However, the WhatsApp-rival has itself confirmed the existence of this feature and that it is under tests. This announcement also comes at the same time when Google is reportedly planning to shelve its Duo platform and replace it with Meet.

In a blog post by Telegram, the company while stating itself as seven years old on this day, confirmed that “We've heard you as well, and will continue to develop features that make Telegram much more than just a messaging app. Today we're adding the one you've been asking for – fast and secure video calls.”

The ‘alpha’ version of video calling feature is available on both Telegram’s Android and iOS apps. This can be initiated from the person’s profile page and can be switched on/off at any time during voice calls. In addition, there’s picture-in-picture mode that lets you chat on videos while scrolling through the thread. Now this is something that’s yet to arrive on WhatsApp.

As for the safety, Telegram adds that all video calls are end-to-end encrypted. You can confirm your connection by comparing the emojis on the screen. “To confirm your connection, compare the four emoji shown on-screen for you and your chat partner – if they match, your call is 100% secured by time-tested encryption also used in Telegram's Secret Chats and Voice Calls.”

But that’s not all, the firm promises to deliver more features and improvements in the coming days. It also confirmed that group video calling feature is underworks. 

In addition to video calls, there’s an improvement in animated emojis as well. To get one of the new animated emojis in a chat, simply send a message with a single emoji.
