Wordle, the word-based online puzzle game, has again landed in some controversy. Furious fans of the game have voiced their displeasure over the Wordle answer yesterday calling it ‘too political' and ‘not an English word’. It has a connection with India and a few other countries. Wordle 255 answer was RUPEE and fans, particularly in the western countries, are not impressed by it. This is not the first time a Wordle solution has been unpopular among fans either. After the acquisition of the game by the New York Times, many have come out saying that Wordle solution is becoming way too hard to guess. Recently, the word BLOKE also became a cause for displeasure after fans claimed it was ‘too British’ and obscure. Now, it seems RUPEE is receiving a similar backlash for being too Indian. Read on to see the reactions of the fans.
The common consensus on social media platforms was that it was trickier than usual, and resulted in a few people’s winning streak being broken. For those who don’t know, guessing the word correctly every day adds to the winning streak, which gets broken if people don’t play one day or can’t guess the word correctly. Once the streak is broken, people have to start again from zero. With Rupee being included, fans of the game from western countries appear to be miffed about such an 'obscure' word’s inclusion.
The word Rupee, for reference, is not just the word for currency in India but also in Pakistan, Indonesia, Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka. Additionally, it is also the main currency in the popular Nintendo game Legend of Zelda. The word is also included in the Oxford dictionary, giving it a full English word status. But some fans in the west were still not impressed with it due to it not being a common word. Wordle 255 answer received a lot of flak as a result.
“Really Wordle, are you being political now?” wrote a fan. While another complained, “It is not even completely an English word”. People were also found blaming NYT for intentionally adding politicized words and ruining a global game. However, the New York Times has stated previously that they have not made any changes to the game. It has also been verified by multiple users who have checked the source code of the game to find out that the entire word list till the year 2027 had already been added to the game right at the moment of its launch and it has not been changed ever since.
On the other hand, Indians have appreciated the word for being more inclusive and considerate of different geographies. It appears that Wordle 255 answer has become yet another polarized word in its short history. Check out some of the fan reactions below.
