World Science Day 2021: Rising global concerns, wildfires, droughts, hurricanes and floods and on top of that, a global pandemic, are all speeding up climate change. Not only that, even our social life is doing that. During these times, science is the only aspect that brings hope to life, just as Covid-19 vaccine did to combat the pandemic. In view of raising awareness of the role of science, every year, 10th November is celebrated as World Science Day for Peace and Development to highlight the significant role of science in society.

World Science Day for Peace and Development aims to bring science closer to all segments of society by keeping them informed about scientific developments. World Science Day for Peace and Development provides an opportunity to show the importance of science in people's lives and to engage them in discussions related to science. Additionally, such an initiative brings fresh perspectives to the global pursuit for peace and development.

World Science Day 2021: Theme

This year, World Science Day for Peace and Development marks the 20th edition and “Building Climate-Ready Communities” is the theme. It highlights the importance of climate change which is becoming a serious threat to the lives of billions of people across the globe.

One of the dark years during the novel coronavirus pandemic showed us the importance of not only health but climate perseverance too. The goal is to bring science closer to society by presenting several key scientific aspects and possible solutions offered by science, technology, and innovation to some of society's most serious global concerns.

World Science Day: History

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) proclaimed World Science Day for Peace and Development in 2001, though the first World Science Day was celebrated on November 10, 2002. Among the participants were, governments, inter-governmental and non-governmental organizations, UNESCO National Commissions, scientific and research institutions, professional associations, the media, science teachers and schools.. UNESCO has generated various projects, programmes and funding for science around the world to foster the role of science and scientists for sustainable societies and in the need to inform and involve citizens in science.
