You will now get more video resolution, options on the YouTube mobile app

If you were one of those people who thought that the levels of control offered on the YouTube app on the mobile weren’t adequate, Google seems to have heard you. The company is adding more precise options for that. According to reports, a recent server-side update for the YouTube mobile app has added further options for control above and beyond the incremental ones that existed, like auto resolutions. Earlier, the auto resolution option was the only secondary selection you could make besides the “advanced” or incremental options.

These new video resolution controls will allow you to prioritise “higher picture quality”, which obviously uses more data, or the “data saver” option that lowers the picture resolution/video quality while streaming videos on the YouTube app on the mobile. When you play the video on the app though, the video quality is going to change depending on your network data and data connection conditions. This “higher picture quality” option caps out at 720p, according to 9to5Google. The “data saver” option tops out at 480p, but it can also drop to as low as 144p resolution.

You will also be able to choose which option you want YouTube to use as default while playing on mobile and WiFi networks from within the YouTube app’s Settings section. Additionally, while playing a video, you can use the “Advanced” tab to choose a specific video playback resolution. Here, you can pick from 144p to all the way up to 4K UHD. These expanded video resolution options should be available widely for all YouTube mobile app users on Android and iOS.
