Ever since the Covid-19 Pandemic struck and the work from home culture took off, Zoom, the video conference app, has seen explosive growth. However, things have changed since then. Zoom is likely to withdraw support from Chromebook laptops. But, don’t worry, the video-calling app is shutting down its Chromebook app to bring something better. The app will reportedly be shut down from August 2022. Users are getting a notification prompt saying, “This app will no longer be officially supported after August 2022. Please use the new Zoom for Chrome PWA to join meetings on ChromeOS.” Here’s all you need to know about why the Zoom app is shutting down on Chromebook laptops.
Zoom app is built on an old technology which hasn’t been upgraded. The functionalities are very limited which is why the developers want to stop it working on Chromebooks.
Notably, Zoom, instead of completely shutting down, had introduced a Progressive Web App for Chromebooks back in 2021. It already has several major updates over the past year. Also Read: Zoom App Work-From-Home Plus! Check out the list of benefits
Dubbed as Zoom for Chrome PWA, the app is a better-equipped version of the older one. It acts more like what Zoom offers on Windows and macOS with a familiar UI alongside more advanced features including background blur.
When the PWA was launched, it didn’t support some features on low-end Chromebooks like Gallery view. There were also bugs with broken video feeds, however, with the new improvements, PWA is now an excellent experience.
So if you’re still using the traditional Zoom app for Chromebooks, we would recommend you to switch to Zoom for Chrome PWA.
