Soon, you will be able to check if you've been overcharged by a liquor vendor. The Delhi government is set to launch a web-based application for smart phones that will give you information, including the cost of the bottle, if duty on it was paid by the outlet and whether the vendor is authorised to sell it or not, with a simple scan of the barcode on the bottle.
The move will also help improve revenue collection of the excise department while ensuring greater transparency in the system.
"There have been instances where shop owners have tampered with the MRP or they sell liquor that has been purchased from the neighbouring towns at a lesser price but they charge more from the people. This interactive application will allow people to share the information with the excise department in case they find anything amiss," said a senior Delhi government official.
Sources further added that the excise department has prepared a proposal for the same and it been sent to the chief secretary for an approval. Soon after the application is launched, people will be able to download it free of cost on any smart phone.
"The testing of the software is being carried out and so far we have received favourable results. The excise department has a supply chain and every bottle has a barcode, so tracking these through the application will not be difficult," added the official.
There are around 460 liquor vends including department stores and government-owned outlets, besides 360 restaurants in the city which serve liquor.
App users can scan the barcode on the liquor bottle using their smart phones. Information, including the cost of the bottle and whether the vendor is authorised to sell it or not, will be provided free of cost.
