A majority of parents in the US join Facebook in order to keep tabs on their children through the social networking site, a new report has said.

The Education Database Online, which examines educational programs in the United States, released a study that claimed that number of parents who have pages of their own are growing as the popularity of Facebook grows.

In the past two years, the percentage of American mothers who are on Facebook has grown dramatically, jumping from 50 per cent in 2010 to 72 per cent in 2012.

Though parents may try to act cool on the social networking site, a vast majority of them admit that the most likely target of their Facebook stalking is their own children, the Daily Mail reports.

According to the paper, the report claimed that 43 per cent of parents who have Facebook accounts check their children's profiles every day.

It also said that 31 per cent admit to doing so four to five times every week.

An additional 14 per cent cop to checking their children's pages sporadically while 11 per cent only check once every month, the report added.

The top three areas of interest to nosy parents, includes children's status updates, posts made by their children's friends on their wall, and photos that they are tagged in.
