Microsoft to focus on Xbox Series X console production, halts Xbox One X, One S All-Digital Edition manufacturing

After several reports indicating the shortage in supply of Xbox One X and Xbox One S gaming consoles, Microsoft has finally confirmed that it is indeed halting the production of two products. The Redmond-based tech firm says that this is being to focus on the production of its upcoming Xbox Series X gaming console, which the company has already announced. 

“As we ramp into the future with Xbox Series X, we’re taking the natural step of stopping production on Xbox One X and Xbox One S All-Digital Edition,” said the Microsoft spokesperson in a statement to The Verge. The firm added the Xbox One S will however, continue to be manufactured and sold globally.

It is worth adding that since Microsoft is ending the production of these two consoles, those who were planning to get their hands on it, can do so only for a limited time since the stocks last with the retailers. “Gamers can check with their local retailers for more details on Xbox One hardware availability,” added the spokesperson in the statement.

Meanwhile, Microsoft is not just planning to launch a single console in its Xbox Serie X line up this year. The firm is expected to introduce a more affordable version by next month. Codenamed ‘Lockhart’ the console is being rumoured to be called as Xbox One S.

Microsoft has not yet confirmed the existence of the console. However, rumors indicate that it could be a rival to PlayStation 5 Digital Edition. What indicates that Microsoft could indeed be working on ‘One Series S’ is that it has previously launched Xbox One S All-Digital Edition as well. And since the Xbox Series X supports disk, it won’t be surprising to see an all-digital version of it in future.

Rumours also point out that the Xbox Series S might have a different set of specifications than the regular Series X. If true, this will be unlike what PlayStation has done this time. Besides the glaring absence of the disk drive, the PS5 Digital Edition has the same hardware as the regular version.
