A dry spell, actually

Rubi Malone is a professional bounty hunter who can do pretty much anything, as long as it pays well. During a contract her employer betrays her, and leaves her to die. Once she recovers, she begins her blood-soaked journey of vengeance and retribution.

This is the basic premise of Wet, developer A2M's latest effort. The game doesn't spend much time providing an intricate plot and its one-dimensional characters don't help either. Rubi, voiced by Eliza Dushku, gets quite annoying while the rest of the characters are generic and unforgettable.

Gameplay
All those who've played Max Payne would feel right at home with the game's bullet time where you dive and shoot in 'slow mo'. Rubi, however, has more moves up her sleeve, like the ability to wall run, or slide down a ladder, or slide across the room while shooting in slow motion. When her enemies get too close, she can cut them with her sword in a smooth transition from gunplay to swordplay.

It's entertaining, but gameplay tends to get repetitive. Nearly every level goes something like this: You enter an area, slide, dive and jump around the place, shoot everyone and finish the level in a larger area where you'll have to take on multiple waves of enemies until you cut off their spawn points. The only thing that breaks the monotony are occasional levels when Rubi gets furious — these have a totally tripped out colour palette.

The unconventional levels rely heavily on QTEs (Quick Time Events) that are over the top, and quite entertaining. These levels finish all too soon though.

Weapons
The platforming feels terribly out of place. It's not as bad as the challenges the game forces you to undergo every time you unlock a weapon.

Visually the game has a wicked personality and is surely inspired by the works of Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez. The entire game is bathed in a grainy filter and from time to time loading screens are disguised by ancient (and I'm pretty sure fictitious) commercials.

What we like

* Gets monotonous
* Doesn't look too hot
* One dimensional characters populating a cliched plot

Verdict
Once you get past the game's zany attitude you can see it's not a very good looking one. Character models look all right and levels lack serious detailing.
