Google celebrated 101 years of electric traffic lights with an animated doodle on Wednesday. The doodle shows cars with the letters spelling 'Google' halting at a red traffic light and then rushing past it as it turns green.

An American policeman Lester Wire, in Utah, first developed an electric traffic light in 1912 and used red-green lights. The American Traffic Signal Company installed a traffic signal system on the corner of East 105th Street and Euclid Avenue in Cleveland, Ohio two years later on 5 August 1914.

Before the electric signals came into use, police officers used to work the lights by hand. In 1920 Wire's traffic light system was modified and bells were added to alert motorists when the lights were about to change. The bells were then replaced with the amber light and it continues to be used on traffic light systems even today.
