Gmail has many options that can help keep spam emails away.

Gmail last week had a serious spam issue. There was this bug in Gmail which caused all mails including spam to land up directly in the primary inbox. Google has fixed this bug and users should stop seeing spam mails in their inbox now.

Gmail already categorises unwanted mails and puts them in the spam folder which is then wiped out after 30 days. This however doesn’t prevent every unwanted mail to fall in the spam folder and we sometimes receive it in our primary inbox. So here are a few things you can do to keep your Gmail spam free.

You’ll probably receive spam mails from certain accounts regularly. The report and block tool can come pretty handy here. You’ll find both options under the three-dotted button that’s visible on top. You can choose to either “report spam” or even block the sender.

Filter messages

If you don’t want to report the mail as spam or block the sender you can filter such messages. This helps in preventing future messages from appearing in your inbox. You can do this by going to the same three-dotted menu and selecting “filter messages like these”.

You can also add more details like mails which have certain words, size and attachments for the filter. Then you can decide what to do with these filtered mails. There are options like archiving it, deleting it, labeling as potential spam and more. Gmail will automatically perform the action chosen for such mails.

Unsubscribing mails

Another option which is manual but helps is unsubscribing emails. These are mostly for promotional mails that should actually land up in the promotional folder but appear in the primary inbox. For such emails, you just open it, scroll down and select unsubscribe. You will no longer receive emails from that sender.
