Google Home app may soon let you give limited access to your smart home devices

Google, up until now, has followed a simple ‘all or nothing’ approach when it comes to giving access in its Home app. But that is about to change as soon the company may enable users to give restricted access to their smart home devices.

If you have used the Google Home app before, you would know that you can either grant complete access to all your smart home devices to an individual or you give no access at all. There is no trick using which you can limit this access.

Now, folks at Android Police have spotted a piece of code in the Google Home app on Android that suggests otherwise. The company is working on providing varying degrees of access in the Home app. For understanding, users will be able to give access to just smart devices in the guest bedroom of their homes when they have family members staying over at their place.

The report states that when users visit the Household option in the Google Home settings, they will see a list of all people in their home along with the usual option to invite another person. Now, when they tap an individual in the list a new page shows which access level someone has and which devices they can control. The company has introduced a new Access Details section here.

That said, this feature hasn’t been rolled out in the app yet. Tapping on the Access Details button still shows a new page with the text that reads -- "Everyone in this home can view all activity and access all devices and settings, including devices that are added later." So it is possible that the company will fine-tune and add this functionality in the coming days.
