Google Pay revamp with shopping features in the works

Google is reportedly working on revamping its payment app with new shopping features. Google Pay will have brands integrated in the app through which users can directly shop and make purchases.

This feature is said to make Google Pay a “one-stop portal for commerce” according to a report by The Information (via 9to5Google). Google Pay users will be able to buy from integrated brands within the app itself. These brands will have their dedicated buttons on Google Pay. Also, this app overhaul will take place in the US.

Google Pay in India already has many brands and companies integrated on its app. Users can’t shop from the app but they can pay their bills, book tickets from MakeMyTrip and Goibibo and more. Google Pay is big in India and the company plans to bring its feature to other markets including the US.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai talked about its payment app success in India and expanding its features globally.

“We’ve had a lot of traction with our payments product over the past 18 months. We had a tremendously successful launch in India from which we learned a lot of features, and we’re bringing that and we’re revamping our payments products globally. And so I’m excited about that rollout, which is coming up in 2020. I think that will make the experience better,” Pichai said during the company’s Q4 earnings call.

Google Pay is however being investigated in India over allegations that the company is abusing its market position, according to a Reuters report. The complaint states that Google Pay has an advantage over other apps as the company showcases its app more prominently on Android over other apps.
