Google’s Gmail, others iOS apps updated for the first time since Apple’s privacy label enforcement

Search giant Google recently started showing “Data Linked to You” card on its Gmail App Store but the app itself never got an update. However, after months it has finally received one. It has also updated other services like Google Meets, Sheets, Docs, Calendar and Tasks (via Engadget). Although the update brings widgets for Tasks on iOS 14, others have received minor updates that are mostly centered around bug fixes and performance improvements.

It's worth noting that it is also the first time that Google has started rolling out new versions of these apps ever since Apple started forcing third party developers to submit their privacy nutrition labels on the App Store.

Some of the YouTube apps were however updated last month. But that said, Some of the iOS apps by Google are yet to get updates. For instance, the company has not rolled out any changes to its Chrome browser app ever since November.

It also rolled out the update for Drive iOS app on December 7, which was a day before Apple made privacy labels mandatory. Although the Drive App Store page now shows a privacy label, Chrome's app store page still doesn't.

When Google updated the Gmail App Store page last month, it started showing a card about “Data Linked to You” that Google may collect information about your Purchases, Location, Contact Info, Contacts, User Content, Search History, Identifiers, Usage Data, Diagnostics, along with another entry that simply said Other Data.

Since Google’s privacy labels for Gmail clearly indicate that the data that is collected may be linked to you, it certainly explains why the company has been reluctant to update its apps on the App Store.
