Google Search is undoubtedly the most widely used search engine in the world, and the service is used on almost every internet-connected device such as PCs, Macs and smartphones. Users can access the search engine from the built-in app on Android smartphones, or via the browser on mobile and computers. However, Google has now taken a very big step - it has stopped working on this browser. Google has officially dropped support for Microsoft Internet Explorer 11 browser.

While it is surprising that Google has taken so long to drop support for Internet Explorer, a software engineer at the company recently tweeted that Google had officially dropped support for Internet Explorer 11 in the main product. This means that Google Search users on the old Internet Explorer browser will not see the modern search results and answers that are visible while using Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge and similar browsers. The end of support for Google Search follows the company's decision to drop support for Google Docs, Sheets and Slides on Internet Explorer earlier this year.

Users have had several years to upgrade from Internet Explorer that was released eight years ago, when Windows 10 was yet to be released. The browser, which was the default on Windows 8.1, had already fallen behind modern browsers like Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge and Mozilla Firefox in terms of features and security. Fast forward to 2021 and Microsoft has been making several upgrades to Microsoft Edge, the successor to Internet Explorer. This means that users should switch to one of the other previously mentioned browsers in order to browse the internet safely and enjoy the benefits of modern web technologies.

With Windows 11 arriving earlier today, Microsoft’s focus has been on further integrating its apps like Microsoft Teams and Microsoft Edge and other services for a more cohesive user experience. The company has also made it very difficult to switch away from Microsoft Edge, the default browser. However, if you use Mozilla Firefox, you can reportedly make it the default browser on Windows 10 with a single click inside the browser’s settings, something that other browsers could adopt in the future.
