Microsoft Windows 10 May 2019 Update: Remove USB, SD card to download the latest update

If you're going to install the upcoming Windows 10's May 2019 update, you will have to remove USB, microSD and other external storage from your PC.

Ahead of the official release, Microsoft has said that it will block the next update on PCs that are attached with external storage. The company has blamed "inappropriate drive reassignment" as the reason behind blocking the update. It also promised to fix the issue in future updates.

"Inappropriate drive reassignment can occur on Windows 10-based computers that have an external USB device or SD memory card attached during the installation of the May 2019 update. For this reason, these computers are currently blocked from receiving the May 2019 Update. This generates the error message that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section if the upgrade is tried again on an affected computer," said the company in a support document.

Microsoft also elaborated the issue. Consider you're downloading the Windows 10 May 2019 update on a PC that has USB port inserted. So before the installation of the update, "G" drive is associated with the external storage. But after the update, it's relocated a different drive, say "H."

Microsoft is recommending users to remove the external media and restart the device for smoother installation of the Windows 10 May 2019 update.

According to reports, it's not the first time Microsoft has faced issues with drive assignments. Its recent Build 1803 update reportedly caused similar drive assignment issues to Insiders.

It's surprising Microsoft identified such a critical bug just days ahead of the official release of the update. The company runs a big Insiders programme which allows early testers to give feedback to the company before launching it commercially. Microsoft's Windows 10 October 2018 update had suffered multiple glitches shortly after the commercial roll out. At one point, Microsoft had to halt the global update.
