Telegram vs WhatsApp: These are are two of the most popular free encrypted messaging services in use today, and while the former is massively ahead in terms of numbers, the latter boasts more features than you can shake a stick at. WhatsApp is known to add features at a much slower pace than Telegram – for which the rival service regularly mocks Whatsapp on social media. After WhatApp recently announced a new chat transfer feature, Telegram hit back in jest at the service on Twitter with a movie-based Jumanji GIF. Telegram has been offering this feature to its users for a long time.

WhatsApp recently added support for the ability to transfer chats from an iOS device to an Android device. This feature has been requested by users for years, but WhatsApp had been working on a way to securely transfer data from one platform to another. In fact, WhatsApp still doesn’t support transferring chats from Android to iOS at this time. When WhatsApp tweeted about the new feature to transfer chats, Telegram’s Twitter account responded to the tweet with a Jumanji GIF that said “What year is it?” – the tweet has received over 12,400 likes and 520 replies at the time of publishing this story.

Telegram was clearly poking fun at WhatsApp adding support for bringing one’s chats across platforms, when its own service has supported accessing chats on multiple devices since it was launched in 2013. However, it is worth remembering that Telegram is a cloud based messaging service, while WhatsApp stores your chats on your smartphone. Since Telegram has access to all your messages all the time, they can serve those chats to all your other devices where you are signed in. WhatsApp, on the other hand, delivers end-to-end encrypted chats to your device, after which the messages are deleted from the WhatApp servers, according to the company.

Telegram vs WhatsApp fight is not new and this is not the first time that Telegram has openly mocked WhatsApp on social media. Earlier this year, the app superimposed a message from WhatsApp (asking users to accept a new privacy policy that would share more data with Facebook) on top of a popular GIF of pallbearers dancing at a funeral while holding up a coffin. That response of Telegram gained over 2.76 lakh likes and over 7,600 replies.
