WWDC 2020: Top features coming to Apple Maps

WWDC 2020 kicked off on June 22 via an online event with a keynote by Apple CEO Tim Cook. At its annual event, the company introduced iOS 14, which brings several major upgrades to Apple’s mobile platform.

For instance, Apple redesigned the entire Siri experience on iPhones. Siri now lets users focus on the app in the background even as it performs the asked task. It also shows the responses in small tiles instead of taking over the screen. Apart from Siri, the company also redesigned the Apple Maps app, adding a bunch of new features to the company’s navigational app.

So, here are top features coming to Apple Maps:

1. Apple Maps is getting new cycling directions that will take into account elevation, how busy a street is, and whether there are stairs along the route. This feature will first be available in New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Shanghai, and Beijing.

2. Apple Maps is also getting electric vehicle routing, which adds charging stops along a planned route based on current vehicle charge and charger types. For this, Apple is initially working with BMW and Ford only.

3. Apple Maps is also getting a new Guides feature that shows a curated list of interesting places to visit in a city from respected brands, including AllTrails, Complex, The Infatuation, Time Out Group, and The Washington Post, among others.

4. Apple has also redesigned Maps for macOS Big Sur. It comes with a new Look Around feature that will give users a 360-degree view of a destination.

5. Maps on macOS will also give users detailed indoor maps for major airports and shopping centers.

6. Maps on macOS Big Sur will also allow users to send cycling and electric vehicle routes directly on to the iPhone.
