Xiaomi kicked off the trend of bezel-less phones with its Mi MIX phone in 2016. Since then most of the top smartphone companies including Google, Apple and Samsung have joined the full-screen bandwagon. The Chinese company, however, is set to heat up the competition with its new smartphone under its MIX lineup.
Dubbed as Mi MIX 2S, the smartphone is speculated to be launched at the Mobile World Congress (MWC), the annual technology conference scheduled to take place between February 26 and March 1 in Barcelona.
Leaked renderings of Mi MIX 2S reveal an all-glass front with minimum bezels around the display. According to reports, the phone will have an "almost 100%" screen. In order to achieve the form-factor, Xiaomi is reportedly going to make some changes such as moving the front camera from the bottom to top right corner, which seems like a modified version of the notch on iPhone X.
Note that Xiaomi's Mi MIX 2 has a selfie camera at the right corner of the bottom. The trade off is that you need to use the phone upside down to take selfies. As we mentioned in our first impressions of Xiaomi Mi MIX, the problem with the upside down feature was that it wasn't optimised for popular social networking websites such as Facebook and Instagram. Hence, shifting the location of the front-camera from the bottom to top right corner makes a lot of sense.
Bezel-less phones: Are they really bezel-less?
Even though full-screen phones are often called as bezel-less phones, the fact is no phone is completely bezel-less.
Xiaomi's original Mi MIX featured a 91.3% screen-to-body ratio while the second-generation Mi MIX 2 had a relatively lesser 82.63% screen-to-body ratio. Mi MIX 2, however, featured a more compact 5.99-inch display as compared to the predecessor's 6.4-inch.
Putting this into perspective, Apple's top-end iPhone X has 81.49% screen-to-body ratio whereas LG's V30 has 83.24%. Samsung's Galaxy S8, S8 Plus and Note 8 have 83.6%, 84%, and 83.2% ratio. Source: Digital Trends
