A Zoom spokesperson has said that the company’s strategy for end-to-end encryption is still a “work in a progress”, reports Engadget. The spokesperson said so in response to a report that claimed Zoom was planning to roll out stronger encryption for paid subscribers only.
According to Engadget’s updated report, the Zoom spokesperson also pointed out that the company had already transitioned to AES 256-bit GCM encryption for all users.
Earlier, a Reuters report said that the company had plans to strengthen the encryption of video calls for paid users which includes enterprises and institutions.
Zoom’s road to provide end-to-end encryption is not without challenges.
“An end-to-end model, which means no one but the participants and their devices can see and hear what is happening, would also have to exclude people who call in from a telephone line,” noted Reuters in its report.
Zoom has attracted millions of users around the world as the governments and companies are encouraging users to work from home. The video conferencing platform, however, has come under scanner over poor privacy protocols.
After reports of privacy loopholes and events such as Zoombombings, Zoom sprung into action by announcing a slew of measures to secure the platform. It has also hired Alex Stamos, former Facebook security chief, and security experts.
