iOS 16 is a big update for iPhone users and if you haven't got it yet, you should head to the Settings and install it immediately. A new customisable lockscreen, keyboard haptics, and the ability to edit messages are just some of the features iOS 16 excites us with. However, the upcoming iOS 16.1 update brings a feature that is going to please gamers and creators alike. The iOS 16.1 update will now allow your iPhone to install the app data in background before you launch the app first.

The feature will work as soon as an app installation completes. It allows the app to run in the background and start downloading the app data as well as files. By the time you open the app, it will have downloaded most of the data, or all of it. Hence, you can start using your app without waiting for it to download the in-app data. The feature is also coming to macOS Ventura.

What remains to be seen is whether the feature is applicable on games that need to download the in-app data separately. Titles such as Call of Duty: Mobile, Asphalt 9, and Apex Legends Mobile could vastly benefit from this feature, especially when someone upgrades from an old iPhone, or moves to a new iPhone for the first time.

Other than pre-load in-app content, the iOS 16.1 update will also bring a couple of other features. The lockscreen customisation feature is getting a big revamp, letting you customise either the lockscreen or homescreen individually. The battery meter will be coming to the iPhone XR, iPhone 11, iPhone 12 Mini and iPhone 13 Mini, and it will get a revamped icon as well. Live Activities will now be implemented, which means you can track your food or Amazon delivery from the lockscreen, if the developers make use of the feature.

The iOS 16.1 update could be announced in October along with the iPadOS 16.1 update, the latter being the first annual update for iPads this year. The iPadOS 16.1 update will introduce the Stage Manager feature to iPad Pro 3rd and 4th Gen models, as well as the M1 powered iPad models from the present lineup.
