NASA climate scientist Peter Kalmus chained himself to a JP Morgan Chase bank last week to protest against global warming. Kalmus posted a video of the protest yesterday on Twitter. In the video, he breaks down while talking about the challenge of fighting climate change and the frustrations of not being listened to. With his left hand chained to the bank's door, Kalmus proceeds to give a passionate speech for everyone. “I'm here because scientists are not being listened to. I'm willing to take a risk for this gorgeous planet,” Kalmus said, breaking down in tears, “for my sons”.

Peter Kalmus works as a NASA climate scientist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory located in California. He became a part of the climate change protest after it was revealed that the JP Morgan Chase bank was the largest financier of fossil fuels among any bank in the world between 2016 to 2021. In the six-year period, it had provided $382 Bn for the project according to a report by a consortium of NGOs.

NASA climate scientist breaks down as he warns people about global warming

“We have been trying to warn you guys for so many decades that we are heading towards a f**** catastrophe,” the NASA climate scientist continued in the video, “The scientists of the world are being ignored. And it has got to stop. We are going to lose everything”.

In his speech, Kalmus urged people to not be bystanders as the world becomes more inhospitable every day. He said, “It's time for all of us to stand up, and take risks, and make sacrifices for this beautiful planet that gives us life, that gives us everything”.

Wildlife biologist Allan Chornack was also at the protest and gave a similarly powerful speech. He said, “We are tired of being ignored. We tried being unbiased, we tried being silent, we tried the policy game..we have tried everything”.

Kalmus was arrested at the event. He later tweeted that other scientists at the protest were also arrested and taken to jail. Now free, the NASA climate scientist has been relentlessly tweeting about climate change. In his latest tweet he asks, ‘Shouldn't over 1,000 scientists risking arrest to save the planet be a bigger news story than Elon Musk trying to buy Twitter”.
