Flipkart says over 90% sellers have resumed business on its platform

Flipkart on Saturday said that over 90% of its sellers had resumed business on its e-commerce platform. The company added that it has seen a 125% increase in new seller signing-up on the platform in comparison to its existing seller base. The statistics are for the period between April and June 2020.

The e-commerce company further revealed that MSMEs across India have begun showing a keen interest in taking their businesses online. MSMEs from states such as Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Delhi and Tamil Nadu led in terms of taking their businesses online.

“These sellers operate in various categories ranging from women’s clothing, personal care, food & nutrition, home improvement tools and baby-care products. In addition, other states are also not far behind to explore how Flipkart marketplace can be leveraged to reach the consumers,” said the company in a release.

Flipkart and other e-commerce companies were barred from delivering non-essentials items in the early phase of the Covid-19 lockdowns. Even as the economy is inching closer to the normalcy, there is a revived focus on boosting the MSMEs and startups in the country. The efforts include bringing the MSMEs to the virtual marketplaces for obtaining additional digital footprints.

Reliance recently joined the offline-to-online space with JioMart. Amazon has also launched a “Local Shops on Amazon” programme to support the traditional brick-and-mortar stores. Just yesterday, Amazon launched ‘Smart Stores’, a digital storefront of local shops from which users can purchase and make payments through the Amazon Pay app.
