Global 5G smartphone sale to hit 750 million by 2022, says Qualcomm

Qualcomm is one of the foremost chipmakers in the world. Its processors and modems are used in smartphones across all categories ranging from budget smartphones to premium budget models. Qualcomm is also one of the biggest vendors of 5G modems in the world. Now, the company has shared its predictions about the future of 5G in the world.

Speaking at the Tianyi Intelligent Ecological Industry Summit Forum, Qualcomm CEO Steve Molenkov said that strides made in wireless communication technology has paved the way for the accelerated deployment of 5G in public.

“Wireless communication has become an excellent connection technology, so the commercial process of 5G is accelerating as expected,” he said as per a report by GizChina.

In addition to this, the Qualcomm CEO said that the global 5G smartphone shipment will touch the 750 million mark by 2022. He also said that this figure is expected to rise to 1 billion units the following year in 2023.

Furthermore, Molenkov said that, two years later, that is, in 2025, the number of global 5G connections are expected to rise up to 3 billion and that 5G traffic will account for 45% of global mobile network data traffic, the report added.

Notably, the statement comes shortly after Qualcomm announced a full portfolio of 5G infrastructure semiconductor platforms for broad deployment scenarios. Qualcomm introduced three new 5G RAN platforms -- Qualcomm Radio Unit Platform, Qualcomm Distributed Unit Platform and Qualcomm Distributed Radio Unit Platform -- that will support mobile operators in the deployment of virtualized RAN (vRAN) networks.
