Google adds 23 insects to its AR Search results

Google, earlier this year, added a bunch or animals to its augmented reality (AR) based 3D Search results. The list included emperor penguins, eagles, giant pandas, horses, lions and sharks among others. Now, nearly four months later, the company has added a bunch of creepy insects to the list.

As per a report by The Verge, Google has added a total of 23 insects to the list which has everything from butterflies to beetle. In case you are curious (or love insects), here’s the complete list: rhinoceros beetle, hercules beetle, atlas beetle, stag beetle, giant stag, miyama stag beetle, shining ball scarab beetle, jewel beetle, ladybug, firefly, rosalia batesi, swallowtail butterfly, morpho butterfly, atlas moth, mantis, grasshopper, dragonfly, hornet, robust cicada, brown cicada, periodical cicada, walker’s cicada, and evening cicada.

Compared to the natural size of these insects, the first time you see them on your smartphone in 3D they will appear in a large size. Thankfully, Google has added a functionality that lets users pinch in to reduce the size of the insect that they are viewing. This makes them slightly less creepy than the enlarged ones.

If you haven’t tried this feature before, here’s what you need to do:

-- Open Google Search app or Google on your web browser.

-- Type the name of the insect that you want to see in 3D.

-- Scroll down and click on View in 3D button.

Now you will see a giant insect in your room. Pinch in to reduce the size of the insect and make it more realistic.

It is worth noting that not all phones support this functionality. This is due to the absence of support for Google AR Core. All newer iPhone models support this feature. This includes iPhone 11 series, iPhone X series, iPhone 8 series, iPhone 7 series, iPhone 6 series and the iPhone SE. As far as the Android phones are concerned, the list of phones that support this functionality includes Asus’ ROG Phones, Pixel smartphones and Samsung’s Galaxy S-series and Galaxy Note series smartphones among others.
