Google Photos takes you down memory lane with 'Sand and sun' and ‘Tasty treats’ categories

Google pPsed today, thanks to its tight integration with hundreds of millions of Android devices in use today. Google keeps adding useful new features to its service, some related to backup and archival, some about reminding you of what it considers important moments from your digital memories.

The latest such feature to come to Google Photos is part of its Memories feature, that shows you two types of photos - “Tasty treats” and “Sand and sea”, according to a report by Android Police. As the name suggests, Google’s software will work its magic through your photo collection and identify pictures that look like they match the above criteria and show them to you in a group of “stories”.

The feature might be relying on various pieces of information from your images in order to surface them in the Memories section - for example, location-based data from your images might help the company figure out which images were captured near a seashore.

Similarly, Google could be using machine learning capabilities to identify images of sweet food in your library - this seems more than likely because the report from Android Police also mentions that an image of Googles Android “dessert” statues (featuring Android Cupcake and Android Froyo) were also surfaced as part of the Memories section.

However, these are all theories, as Google is yet to reveal any details about “Sand and sea” and “Tasty Treats” as part of its Memories feature. It could be that the company is adding features in order to convince users to stay on the service in July when free “unlimited” storage for all users will come to an end.
