Google+ replacement ‘Currents’ launching on July 6 for G Suite users

Google shut down Google Plus last year due to low usage but the company still made a replacement for it. Called ‘Currents’ this social networking platform will roll out to G Suite customers on July 6.

Google will transition Google Plus enterprise users to Currents when the app launches. Also, existing Google Plus links will now redirect to Currents. Google introduced Currents last April and it has since been available in beta.

This is how Google explains the app - “Currents is a G Suite app that enables people to have meaningful discussions and interactions across your organization, helping keep everyone in the know and giving leaders the opportunity to connect with their employees.”

Google Currents has a new interface along with new features. There’s a home stream which users can customise to keep posts from leadership as priority. The home stream will also be ordered by relevance so posts will appear according to priority.

Like Google+ users can comment, give feedback and ask questions on posts. Users can also track analytics for their posts. There are tags and streams that can be used to find and discover content of interest. Admins can also assign ‘Content Administrator’ roles to other members who will be able to create custom streams, manage tags, define leaders and more.

Google Currents will be available only to G Suite customers. There’s no word on if Google plans to make a social networking platform again.
