Hearts on our sleeves? Indians used the classic red heart emoji the most on their Bumble bios

We don’t know about you, but Indians on Bumble seem to be wearing their hearts on their… profile bios. According to a report shared by Bumble, just before World Emoji Day, the platform witnessed an 89% rise in emoji usage in 2021 as compared to 2020, particularly on Bumble users’ profile bios. Given that otherwise normal social functions like dating and meeting people went strictly online with the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic last year, people’s use of dating apps also went up. And since meeting in person was out of the question, users on dating apps had to resort to amping up their bios and online chat game. Thus, bring in the emojis to express.

And it is not just dating apps, emojis have become the new expression for our daily conversations. Albeit emoji use is usually restricted to casual conversations, flirting, sexting, etc, that is where all the fun is. According to Bumble’s internal report, there was an 89% increase in the usage of emojis on profile bios on the app globally as compared to last year. And what are these emojis that people are using in their profile bios?

For Indians, it was the classic red heart emoji. Indians ranked the highest in the world in the usage of this classic emoji. Also, the study revealed that Gen Z users on Bumble used the heart emoji more than the millennials in India. The top five emojis used in Bumble’s profile bios in India include the red heart, the winking emoji, the smiling emoji with tears running down, the emoji with the cool sunglasses, and the emoji with the blushing smile. Indian millenials also turned out to be big fans of the winking emoji using it the most on their bios.

When it comes to sexting, the devil emoji is a favourite and was spotted on most Bumble profile bios followed by the flame/fire emoji. And Indians used the donut emoji almost four times more than the eggplant emoji on their Bumble profile bios. “Emojis are emerging as the new love language in India. Interestingly, we have also seen a steady rise in usage of the vaccine emoji this year since the beginning of wider rollout of vaccinations among the younger age group in India. From the classic red heart to heartbreak emojis – Bumble profile bios reveal that single Indians have been quite expressive and are open to using emojis, allowing them to express themselves more effectively when making meaningful connections,” Samarpita Samaddar, Communications Director, Bumble India said commenting in this internal report.
