Logging into your accounts on Chrome for Android might get easier soon

With all the different passwords we have accumulated over all these years, there definitely are moments where you happen to forget one or mess up the credentials and end up getting locked out of an account. We cannot use the same password everywhere so let’s not even go there.

To avoid getting locked out of these accounts, you can use a password manager to store all your different passwords securely, or you can let your browser handle it.

Chrome has the option of filling in both username and passwords for you and now it looks like the Android version of the browser could be getting an upgrade on this. Spotted first by Techdows, this new option is currently being tested and can be accessed by enabling an option flag in the mobile version of the Chrome browser.

This new feature is called - ‘Filing passwords from any origin’. While this does not really explain too much, Google explains that if you enable this flag a button gets added to the password fallback sheet. The button opens a different sheet that allows filing a password from any origin.

According to TechRadar, the Chromium bug tracker reiterates that this new feature will allow users to fill in passwords from any origin and will be accessible via the keyboard.

And this description is not very helpful either since it does not explain exactly what developers mean by ‘origin’. Since the feature is not active yet, its exact purpose is still vague.

Speculations suggest that this new feature might provide a way to override password synchronisation on one device so as you can use an updated password on another device. But we shall have to wait and watch.

This new feature is not active, but you can get an early look and keep a tab on changes by installing Chrome Canary for Android first.

Post that you need to launch Chrome and go to chrome://flags. Search for ‘Filing passwords from any origin’. Click on the drop-down menu and click on Enabled.

Now, restart Chrome using the Relaunch button.

After this is done if you visit the login page for any site, click on the username field and select the account. When you click on the password field, you need to swipe through the password bar until you see the key icon.

Clicking on the key icon will allow you to scroll down till you see the ‘Use other password’ option.

For now, we don’t know if and when this feature will be pushed out the stable version of Chrom for Android.
