Shocking! Temp Google employee fired in just 9 days for being ‘ungoogley’

Who would not like to work with tech giant Google? Well, it is one of the biggest companies in the world and has a big reputation to protect. It also seems to want to protect the 'Google way' in order to keep burnishing the sheen that coats its sterling reputation. Yes, there may well be such a thing as a 'Google way' because a Google employee was fired for being 'ungoogley'. Just check out what happened to Tuesday Carne, 29.

Carne was a temporary worker hired by Google and was thrilled at the prospect. She was actually an employee of Modis who supplies workers to Google. But her dream couldn’t continue for too long, as within nine days, she was fired. The reason cited was that she was being ‘ungoogley’!

Carne believes she is 'Googley' enough, because she has sued Google, and Modis, for wrongful termination. The former worker of Google has filed a complaint with the National Labor Relations Board against Alphabet Inc.'s Google. She used to maintain the equipment at the Google site in South Carolina. The company fills many of such roles with contract firms such as Modis. Right now, Carne is the Executive Assistant at Integrity Business Solutions Provider.

Carne claimed she went to a routine meeting where supervisors reviewed upcoming schedules in her second week on the job. Employees who worked holiday shifts were entitled to double pay, but only if they had been with the company for at least six months. Carne, who had been unaware of the rules, came out strongly. Carne added that she replied, “That's bulls—-.". Within the same day, she received an email from a Modis manager calling her behaviour 'unacceptable and ungoogley', Bloomberg reported. With these remarks she was summarily fired.

Carne reached out to the Alphabet Workers Union, a labour advocacy group, right away. In an earlier case, Google had settled a separate labour lawsuit from the AWU in March, agreeing not to silence workers discussing compensation at the same South Carolina location.

The Communications Workers of America's AWU section has focused on the company's large contract workforce. These employees often earn far less and have significantly fewer perks than Google employees. During the pandemic, when data centre personnel were encouraged to come in on a regular basis, Carne said she was paid $16.50 an hour in the Modis job, in addition to the $200 incentive, Bloomberg Quint reported.

According to the AWU's latest lawsuit, Carne was practicing legally protected speech during the November meeting. Modis and Google representatives did not immediately react to requests for comment.
