Facebook on Monday announced it was launching a tool that will allow its users to export their notes and their posts to third-party services, like Google Docs or WordPress. The new data portability feature comes a month after Apple announced that it was offering a similar service to allow users to transfer all their photos to Google Photos.

While Facebook already allows users to transfer their photos and videos to Backblaze, Dropbox, Google Photos and Koofr, the ability to transfer their posts and images to other platforms in a transparent manner should come in handy. With the expansion of the data transfer tool to also shift people’s posts and notes, the company stated in a blog post that it has renamed the tool “Transfer Your Information”.

Facebook says that the tool was designed with privacy and safety in mind, so users will have to enter their passwords in order to start the transfer between services. Similarly, the data will be encrypted while it is in transit, so users can be reasonably assured that the data won’t be accessible by third parties during the transfer.

Users who want to get started with the tool must first go to their Facebook Settings, then click on “Your Facebook Information”. After clicking on “Transfer Your Information”, they will be presented with a series of prompts to select the specifications of the data transfer, after which they must enter their password to begin the transfer process.

Readers might recall that in 2018, a new open-source, service-to-service data portability platform called the Data Transfer Project was announced to allow people to move their data between online service providers. The project’s current contributors are Apple, Facebook, Google, Microsoft and Twitter.
