Samsung and AMD's Exynos chip for phones and laptops could rival Apple's M1

Apple's powerful M1 processor may currently be one of the most powerful and efficient ARM-based chips to ever feature in a desktop computer, but that could soon change with the arrival of Samsung's rumoured Exynos processors that could feature on both laptops and handsets, according to a new report.

While we have previously reported rumours of Samsung's plans to launch a successor to the Exynos 2100, a report by Korea Economic Daily cites industry experts that have revealed the company's plans to launch a powerful new Exynos chipset later this year, which could likely be the Exynos 2200.

While Samsung's recent decision to drop its custom Mongoose cores and bring its Exynos line closer to ARM's vanilla designs, what is more interesting is the possibility that the upcoming rumoured Exynos 2200 chipset could drop the Mali GPU in favour of a powerful GPU developed with AMD. This would be the first Exynos product to feature the company's graphics hardware and is expected to rival Apple's M1 processor.

Given AMD's solid experience in the desktop graphics market, it is likely that the Exynos 2200 chipset could offer graphics performance that could rival or better the performance of Apple's M1 processor. However, even though a 5nm chipset is on the cards, it is unclear whether the Exynos 2100 successor will be able to beat the M1 on other parameters.

If the new Exynos 2200 is to compete with the Apple M1 chipset, it will have to match the company's revolutionary battery and raw performance improvements that arrived with the M1 – which is something the experts quoted in the report believe to be possible. However, it is unclear whether Samsung will launch the rumoured Exynos 2200 chipset on mobile devices like its Galaxy smartphones, tablets and foldables, along with Windows-based laptops.
