NASA: Don’t miss the Strawberry Moon! Check when and where to watch this Supermoon
Strawberry Moon, 2022: When and where to watch this rare supermoon
Strawberry Moon, 2022: After multiple Lunar Eclipses this year, the world is all set to witness this month's first full moon, today, on June 14. The full moon will be a “Strawberry Moon”, also commonly known as the June full moon or supermoon. According to space.com, the moon will be at the closest point to Earth, commonly known as Perigee.
Today, the moon will appear as a “Supermoon”. This is a phenomenon where the moon appears bigger and brighter than usual.
During this phenomenon, the moon will be at its lowest point all year as the summer solstice is set to arrive on today. According to NASA, the moon will be just 23.3 degrees above the horizon.
NASA has also released a guide for the people to watch the Strawberry Moon. According to it, "On the summer solstice, the Sun appears highest in the sky for the year. Full moons are opposite the sun, so a full moon near the summer solstice will be low in the sky.”
What is a Strawberry Moon?
NASA defines Strawberry Moon as the last full moon of Spring or the first full moon of Summer. It has gained its name from the time of the year when berries open. Unlike Blood Moon where the moon actually appears as red, the moon doesn't change its appearance during the Strawberry Moon phenomenon.
"This name (Strawberry Moon) has been used by Algonquin, Ojibwe, Dakota, and Lakota peoples, among others, to mark the ripening of 'June-bearing' strawberries that are ready to be gathered,” according to The Old Farmer's Athletic, a reference book.
When & where to watch Strawberry Moon?
The Strawberry Moon will be visible via a livestream done by The Virtual Telescope Project in Ceccano, Italy, today, June 14 at 3:15pm EDT or 12:45am IST.
