NASA: A massive geomagnetic storm is just a few hours away from Earth. For the last two days, NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) have been issuing alerts and sharing data on the progression of a halo coronal mass ejection (CME) from the Sun that erupted on Tuesday. The geomagnetic storm has created a big worry for all as its intensity has been increased by another CME, resulting in increasing both the speed and the intensity of the solar radiation. According to NASA, this has caused it to turn into a G2 class solar storm. The storm is expected to cause outages in shortwave radio signals. But it can also cause electricity blackouts, mobile network and Internet disruptions. While humans are not directly at risk due to the storm, it can damage their electronic devices. Read on to know more about this geomagnetic storm and how to protect yourself from it.

NASA: G2 class Geomagnetic storm to hit the Earth within hours

The Center of Excellence in Space Sciences India (CESSI) has also posted on Twitter spreading awareness about this geomagnetic storm. It said, “A halo CME was detected by SOHO LASCO on 11 April. Our model fit indicates a very high probability of Earth impact on 14 April 2022 with speeds ranging between 429-575 km/s+”. It now remains to be seen the amount of damage the geomagetic storm can cause.

While a G5 class geomagnetic storm is generally considered the strongest, capable of causing damage to satellites, disrupting GPS, mobile phone networks, internet connectivity and power grid failure, a G2 geomagnetic storm can also cause some damage. Labeled as a moderate storm, this solar storm can disrupt communication channels including mobile networks, GPS systems and shortwave radio frequencies. In some cases, it can also cause voltage fluctuations in power lines and cause damage to electronic appliances. If you are scared of this geomagnetic storm, do note that they cannot harm humans as all the dangerous radiation is already absorbed by the atmosphere. However, follow these steps to protect your electronic appliances.

How to stay safe during the geomagnetic storm

Step 1:

Try not to charge or plug in any electronic device including smartphones, television and laptops if you sense any voltage fluctuations.

Step 2:

If you use a set-top box that uses a dish antenna, you may consider removing it to protect the device.

Step 3:

If you experience loss of mobile network connectivity, do not panic. Temporary disruptions are expected as the storm hits.

Step 4:

You are free to do all of your daily activities as the solar storm will not directly impact you.

Step 5:

People with pacemakers also need not worry. Although extremely strong geomagnetic storms can interfere with the machine, G2 class geomagnetic storms are not likely to harm the device.
