Do you know Earth’s magnetic field makes a sound? Yes, it does! And a scary sound at that. And most definitely it is not the sound of silence. A team of scientists have collaborated with artists and musicians to reveal the spooky sound of the Earth’s magnetic field. The magnetic field actually plays an important role in Earth’s habitability. It's the "ocean of superheated, swirling liquid iron" within the Earth that shields the planet from harmful cosmic and solar radiation. However, it is not something that we get to hear when it interacts with the charged particles. But we do see auroras when charged particles from the Sun interact with earth's atmosphere magnetic field. And now a group of scientists and musicians has made it possible.
Listen to the spooky sound of Earth's magnetic field in the tweet below:
Musician and project supporter Klaus Nielsen, from the Technical University of Denmark, shared the data taken from ESA’s Swarm satellites, as well as other sources. He explained that the data from these magnetic signals are used to manipulate and control a sonic representation of the core field. He stated, “The project has certainly been a rewarding exercise in bringing art and science together.”
It might sound like a nightmare, but this audio clip is the magnetic field generated by Earth’s core and its interaction with a solar storm, said the researcher. “We gained access to a very interesting sound system consisting of over 30 loudspeakers dug into the ground at the Solbjerg Square in Copenhagen,” he added.
The researchers have set it up in a way that each speaker represents a different location on Earth and demonstrates how the magnetic field has fluctuated over the last 100000 years.
Listen to the Sound of Silence:
Those willing to listen to this amazing rumbling of earth’s magnetic field can come to Copenhagen at Solbjerg Square, Denmark. It will broadcast the rumble of Earth’s magnetic field from October 24 to 30 around 08:00, 13:00 and 19:00.
